UNFPA Supports Government of Afghanistan to Prepare for the National Population and Housing Census

In 2008 the Afghanistan Population and Housing Census had been rescheduled to a later date by Government of Afghanistan. Since then the Central Statistics Office (CSO) – the government body mandated to handle all statistical issues has undertaken a series of preliminary activities in preparation of the Census which will be held at a date yet to be determined by Government. more

 

 

National Day of Community Health Workers:

On 21 May 2009, Ministry of Public Health Of Afghanistan together with World Health Organization, USAD and UNFPA celebrated the first National Day of Community Health Workers.

The Deputy Minister of MoPH, Dr. Faizullah Kakar said “CHWs are the front line of health services and they are the real face of ministry and health centers. With their ability of being in close contact with community, each house in village, they are the messengers of good health and well being to population.”

Based on AIDE MEDICALE INTERNAITNLE (AMI) 20,000 CHW are working in Afghanistan that half of them are women and planed to further train 20,000 more CHW.more
 

A Woman suffering from Obstetric Fistula, due to prolonged labour, hopes to get complete recovery after undergoing third surgery:

On one of the author's usual visits to Malalai hospital's Fistula Centre, she encountered a case of one patient, Sabza bibi, who is suffering from Obstetric Fistula as a result of prolonged labor. Sabza is now admitted in the hospital waiting to go through the third surgery, after the first two unsuccessful ones to solve her problem. The writer talked to Sabza who started recounting her sorrowful story as follows. more

 

UNFPA strengthens the capacity of doctors and health service providers through the establishment of family planning training centres to reduce maternal mortality rate in Afghanistan:

Afghanistan is considered to have the highest maternal mortality rate in Asia and second highest mortality rate in the world. Every two hour two Afghan women die when giving life. more

 

UNFPA, and partners; Ministry of Haj and Religious Affairs and Ministry of Women's Affair organize workshop with Religious Leaders from 10 Provinces of Afghanistan to Promote Women's Health and Rights:

UNFPA and partners Ministry of Haj and Religious Affairs and Ministry of Women's Affairs organizes workshops for Religious Leaders from 10 Provinces of Afghanistan ( Nuristan, Badghis, Paktia, Ghoor and Ghazni, Mazar, Samangan, Paktia, Wardak and Jalalabad) to discuss the issue of “Happy Family and Healthy Society from Islam Prospective”. more

 

UNFPA's Approaches in Reduction of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity in Afghanistan:

The current approach of UNFPA in Afghanistan is to provide an integrated and comprehensive package of development assistance that would contribute to increased capacity of the Government and civil society organisations to deliver effective reproductive health services, with special focus on those living in remote and marginal areas. Apart from policy level advocacy, UNFPA is piloting a culturally adapted community centred approach to maternal mortality reduction in more than 20 districts spread across five provinces. more.

 

UNDAF 2010-2013:

The working groups continued developing UNDAF 2010-2013. The UNDAF focuses on 3 areas of: 1) Good Governance, Peace and stability, 2) Sustainable livelihoods: Agriculture, food security and income opportunities, 3) Basic Social services: education , Health, Water and sanitation. The draft outcomes, outputs, indicators, targets with baseline indicators presented to UNCT for review. Cross cutting issues of UNDAF are: capacity building, gender equity, counter narcotics, regional cooperation, anti corruption, environment. more.
