Taluqan, 17 August 2015 - The Central Statistics Organization (CSO) of Afghanistan with technical support of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, presented today the roll-out of the Socio-demographic and Economic Survey (SDES) in Takhar Province at Taluqan in the presence of the Governor of Takhar and a high-level delegation from the CSO in Kabul.

"It is a pleasure for us to launch the SDES in Takhar province," said Haseebullah Mowahed, Deputy President General of CSO. "This survey will collect key information about the social and economic status of Takhar's citizens. Such information will be essential to address the key development issues in the province through evidence-based policies and programs," said Mowahed. "We would like to take this opportunity to call for the support of the people in Takhar to participate in this survey and guarantee its success," Mr Mowahed concluded.

Takhar is the eighth province in the country conducting this survey which covers every single household and all other establishments where people live or work.

The survey will follow different stages: mapping of the province, data collection, data entry and data analysis. The findings of the survey will provide up-to-date and accurate information on the number of households in the province, age and sex distribution of household members, and information about education, health, employment and other socio-economic information. The data collected from the survey will be analyzed in a provincial report to be launched in near future. .

"CSO has developed the required expertise to successfully conduct SDES.  Hopefully by 2018, all provinces in Afghanistan will be covered by this survey. For the people of Takhar this is an opportunity to assist CSO in successfully completing this data collection exercise", said Dr Bashir Najeeb, UNFPA Population and Development Officer, on behalf of UNFPA Representative in Afghanistan.

About SDES:

Since 2011, UNFPA has supported the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) to conduct the provincial level Socio-Demographic and Economic Survey (SDES). Bamiyan was the first province to conduct the SDES, followed by Ghor and Daikundi in 2012. The survey has also been done in Kabul, Parwan, Kapisa and Samangan provinces. CSO and UNFPA intend to ensure that all the provinces of Afghanistan have a complete and up-to-date SDES by 2018, so that future planning occurs on the basis of robust and technically sound data.
