Jawzjan, Afghanistan—Dr. Nasiba Sahar, a dedicated female medical doctor at Aqcha District Hospital, has long been a fervent champion for the health and well-being of women and adolescent girls in the region. Her unwavering commitment to these vulnerable populations is well-known, as she tirelessly strives to provide comprehensive care and support.
However, despite her deep-seated dedication and the critical need within the community, the hospital frequently grappled with severe shortages of essential reproductive health medicines and supplies. These persistent deficiencies presented formidable challenges, significantly hindering the hospital's capacity to deliver adequate medical services. The lack of crucial medications, contraceptives, and other vital reproductive health provisions severely limited its ability to effectively address the diverse and urgent needs of patients seeking care.
This unfortunate reality often left Dr. Sahar and her team in difficult positions, unable to provide the full spectrum of services necessary to safeguard the health of women and girls in Aqcha District. This challenge began to change with the donation of Inter-Agency Reproductive Health kits from UNFPA, through the support of the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.
The vital support provided to Dr. Sahar and her dedicated team significantly enhanced their capacity to deliver crucial reproductive health services. The comprehensive kits included much-needed medicines, equipment, and supplies, allowing them to deliver timely and effective reproductive health services, directly addressing critical healthcare gaps in the region.
Beyond the tangible resources, the Emergency Response Team, a collaborative initiative between UNFPA and the Afghan Family Guidance Association (AFGA), implemented robust capacity-building measures. They conducted in-depth orientation sessions designed to empower the staff with the knowledge and skills necessary for the efficient utilization of the kits. These sessions also covered essential aspects of managing monthly consumption, ensuring sustainable use of resources, and streamlining reporting processes, thereby fostering greater accountability and transparency.
Dr. Sahar, a beacon of dedication in her community, expressed profound gratitude for this timely assistance. She underscored the transformative impact of UNFPA’s intervention, highlighting how it has substantially fortified the hospital’s capability to provide high-quality reproductive healthcare.
“With these essential supplies, we can now respond to our patients’ needs more effectively and ensure safe services for women and girls,” she said. Her words resonated with the lived experiences of countless women and girls who would now benefit from improved access to vital health services.
Furthermore, Dr. Sahar emphasized the critical importance of sustained support. She articulated that continued collaboration between UNFPA, AFGA, and the local healthcare providers would be absolutely crucial to maintaining these life-saving services.
Dr. Sahar’s vision extended beyond immediate relief, focusing on the long-term sustainability of reproductive health initiatives for women and adolescent girls in Aqcha District, ensuring a healthier and more secure future for the community. This ongoing partnership is seen as the cornerstone for building resilient healthcare systems capable of meeting the evolving needs of the population.
